At 22 kilometers south of San Juan del Sur you will find Natural Reserve La Flor. Here you can be one of the privileged few to enjoy an annually returning event: the arrival of thousands of Olive Ridley sea turtles, who come to lay their eggs at the La Flor beach. During so called arribids thousands of turtles arrive in a couple days, which is a unique, spectacular happening. You can also watch the baby turtles come out of their eggs and run towards the sea, approximately 50 days after their mothers arrived.
The Olive Ridley or “Paslama” sea turtle is an endangered species well-known for its massive synchronous nesting emergences at the beach called “la flor” now a wildlife refuge located 20 km south of San Juan del sur. The seasonal occurrences happen several times during each lunar cycle in the July to February nesting season. Turtle viewing is usually at night time but can be done during daylight upon large arrivals.
Viewing of hatching is also possible. Discovering this beautiful wildlife refuge and witnessing these phenomena is an unforgettable experience.
