On the highlands in the Pacific region of Nicaragua, one can find the picturesque “white towns.” These towns were given their name in the early colonial period because the Spaniards decided to paint their homes in white. Nowadays “white towns” is a part of Nicaraguan folklore. Traditions of the past still persist in towns such as: Diriamba, Jinotepe, Masatepe, Niquinohomo, San Juan de Oriente and Catarina. The interesting fact is that each town has its own specialty when it comes to art, food and tradition. In the past, these towns were known as “witch doctor’s towns,” since a lot of the people were shamans and did that for a living. Nowadays, there are not many witch doctors left, but some people suspect that certain individuals in the towns are still devoted to these practices. There is a good balance between the rainy and dry seasons and this combines to make a beautiful area full of fruits and trees. The landscape is very attractive and people are humble and friendly. We take the tour through these towns making strategic stops in the most interesting places. We learn how people make bamboo baskets and furniture and we go by Somoza and Sandino’s native towns. We’ll go shopping in San Juan de Oriente and Catarina (pottery). Here you find beautiful arts and crafts and nurseries with beautiful flowers. We will also see the view from Catarina of the surrounding water and volcano landscape and get to know the Nicaraguan’s character, personality and way of life.
